Brain Square

Square brains and weird science ??? or are we facing the future of machine intelligence ??
The difference between a real brain and a simulation is in the format. Friends, from the heights of Mount Linux billions of silicon neurons "vous regardent".

Trainmover: all things large and small...

I must admit that then when I read the Hitachi news release I had some big train (even shinkansen or at least TGV) in mind when it said "move the train by the power of Your brain" but as the japanese tend to miniaturization I should have been prepared to what the video really shows. But then again size does not matter and the principle is sound. NIRS: Near Infrared Spectroscopy (cfr former blog entries) is here to stay especially in BCI applications: (no hassle with gelled electrodes and artifact by popping electrodes or changing impedances). Keep singing and and the train will be on the move and keep perfectly silent when it enters the station in order to make it stop. I said silent ... that means no calculations !! stop thinking please...stop... please....aaaaaaiaiiii

Do some cool brain mining..

A nice article by Scott makeig on the new methods in analysing EEG/ERP data. individual ERP , ERPImage, time frequency dynamics are the new kids on the block.

depression ? : cleared

I sing the body electric.....
The use of DBS to treat depression gets a new boost.
Happy at the Push of a Button The world seems just grey and bleak for deeply depressive patients. Pills and therapy are not enough to bring back a life in color. Psychiatrists in Bonn are now trying their luck with pulsers directly in the brain: With pulser electrodes they want to make the reward center get going - and they have first accomplishments. Ag/AgCl EEG electrodes: Auto da Fe

make Your own EEG electrodes (and save a buck or two): 1/ Go to the shop and get lead-free solder. It is a mixture of tin and silver. 2/ Make a drop and let it fall on a flat surface. 3/ solder a wire to the new formed disc. 4/put in saltwater with white vinegar with a sacrificial cathode made from your mom's sterling silverware. 5/ The positive is the little disc you just made. (yep You need a battery) 6/ Let it run until it's black. now you have a professional ag/agcl electrode. 7/ Use hot glue to fashion the disc holder. 8/ Check cost with prices of official manufacturers
9/ Sing , shout, enjoy and be very happy !

Supercomputing at Your desktop

Desktop supercomputing may be closer then you think. And supercomputing power is what every digital EEG afficiaonado has high on his/hers whislist for Christmas and santa. Perhaps You already have dual core processors and embedded garphic processors under the hood of Your PC but unfortunately the art of multi thread optimisation has not yet come to most plain programmers near You. This is indeed not a trivial task and requires highly specialised programming skills and training.
Intel proposes an exeskeleton architecture to ease this transition. It may give You an "alien" effect or You might dig it. Read all about it at Tom's hardware page (to be recommended)

Music and the Brain

The latest issue of "nature reviews in neurosciences" has a very interesting article on Music and the Brain. I therefore dedicate this entry entirely to two marvelous people whose friendsschip is like music to the soul.
Salud to my true Staeckmaatjes
Jacques DB and Janine DR who are are forever young in combining friendship, music and intelligence.

Statistical analysis of EEG coherence data

Not for the faint of hart (and math) but when someone needs a bit of coherrence in his life this might be a good place to come to...
