Maxi MEG

If You - by change or merits- happen to be disgustingly rich the time is now right to spend some of that hard cash on a really usefull acme.
Of course the people at ANT will be happy to help You out and "navigate" You to a complete solution. MEG is indeed fantastic and should be every neurophysiologist's dream. It does not replace EEG though but is nicely complementary. But it sure needs very good analysis software to visualise what is going on in the brain. With ASA, the guy's at ANT provide the best tools on the market.

Brain on Fire !! (video)

If an image is worth a thousand words, a movie drives home the message of a thousand images. For this three-dimensional visualization of amyloid deposition in the brain of a person with mild Alzheimer disease, PET images obtained after injecting the amyloid tracer PIB were superimposed on the magnetic resonance image of the same patient. The patient’s MMSE was 25. The movie shows extensive amyloid deposition in cortical and deep brain areas. This patient’s amyloid probably won’t spread much further as disease progresses. In fact, PIB imaging studies comparing AD patients, people with mild cognitive impairment, presymptomatic carriers of familial AD mutations, and healthy controls are indicating that a person’s amyloid load has more or less fully formed even before they develop symptoms of AD. The relationship of amyloid deposition and AD symptoms over time is the subject of current studies.

ANT: Neuronavigation

Magnitrace 3D Navigation system for TMS Coil positioning Magnitrace allows to: - Co-register TMS, MRI and EEG using sophisticated 3D digitization technology. Image guided TMS can be applied with simultaneous recording of high-density EEG allowing maximum flexibility in the application of the different modalities. - Review results of earlier navigation/stimulation/source reconstruction for navigation purposes, e.g. repetition of stimulus at the same conditions - Analyze the positioning of the coils in exact time synchronization with the EEG/EMG/EP data to separate good from bad trials, create conditional averages of EPs etc. - Digitize electrode positions by means of the digitizer pen 3D electrode digitizerMagnitrace takes care of the electrode digitization procedure and records, visualizes and stores the digitized electrode positions. The sequence of the digitization procedure is pre-defined by the user. Positions are acquired by locating the respective electrode at the scalp, placing the digitizer pen at that location and pressing a button. Markers (nasion, left and right pre-auricular points) are digitized as well. This way, the electrode positions are transformed to the nasion-ear coordinate frame. During the procedure a head tracker monitors the movement of the subject and compensates the acquired positions for these movements. The system provides real-time feedback on the current location of the digitizer pen and acquired electrode position by displaying them in the MRI and head surface. Digitized electrode position are immediately marked on the head surface and visualized in the MRI for inspection. The 3d electrode digitizer module in Magnitrace is also sold as standalone electrode digitizer (without the functionality for TMS coil navigation). More information is provided in the asa-lab digitizer section. How does it work? The Magnitrace system is based on the Polaris Spectra system. This tracking hardware uses infrared light to track tools (like a digitizer pen or TMS coil). Each tool is equipped with multiple markers. The markers reflect infrared light back to the position sensor and from this the 6D position is retrieved (position and orientation). These positions are visualized realtime in the Magnitrace together with the MRI and possibly the head model of the subject/patient.

Not for the faintharted. But it could change Your point of view on segmentation: Application of the change-point analysis to the investigation of the brain's electrical activity

A.Ya.Kaplan, S.L.Shishkin

This chapter is devoted to one of the most interesting applications of non-parametric statistical diagnosis, namely, to the analysis of the human brain's electrical activity (the electroencephalogram, or EEG). The meaning and the features of the EEG, as well as the problems arising from the high non-stationarity of the EEG signal, are reviewed. We present experimental results demonstrating the application of the statistical diagnosis methods described in this book to the EEG, and discuss the prospects for further development of the change-point detection methodology with the emphasis on the estimation of coupling between different signal channels.

BRC: new kid on the Blog

Resting QEEG eyes open and closed

A baseline and overall stability

Auditory habituation

Automatic learning

Auditory oddball task (ERP)

Efficiency in processing relevant information

Visual tracking

Automatic tracking

A Go/No-go task

Extent of impulsivity

Visual working memory

Working memory

Conscious and sub-conscious faces

Processing of facial emotions

Electronic maze

Capacity to plan

The startle response

Body's 'fight or flight' reflex

A visit to consciousness

Cognition and consciousness. This study shows clearly that consciousness is not necessary to activate cognitive circuitry. Subliminal stimuli show activation of hippocampal (novelty) and prefrontal structures.
The figure shows increased activation in the prefrontal and hippocampal regions during explicit retrieval elicited by subliminally presented primed (Recognized) and unprimed (Unrecognized) stimuli. A majority of stimuli in the primed condition were recognized by the volunteers, while in the unprimed condition, most of the stimuli were unrecognized. The prefrontal activity was unilateral (left middle frontal gyrus) in the unprimed (Unrecognized) condition, and bilateral (left middle frontal and right superior frontal gyri) in the primed (Recognized) condition. Primed stimuli activated the right hippocampus while unprimed stimuli activated the left hippocampus. Histograms show percent change in MR signal intensity in different contrast conditions in the areas of interest: R = Recognized (primed) picture; U = Unrecognized (unprimed) picture; B = Baseline condition; BA = Brodmann's area. EEG patterns

Besides EEG artefacts also an atlas of specific patterns in epilepsy and pathology is very useful. Try Medscape's.. Its free for You to try it here

EEG artefacts

Some say that an experienced EEG'ist is a person who mastered the art of distinguishing artefact from truely valid signals. There is certainly a lot of truth in this statement. So any tool that could help us to become more 'experienced' and proficient in the 'art' is welcome. That is wat emedicine offers with this handy electroencepfalografic atlas. Dive into the world of artefacts and get a black belt at the art of EEG pattern recognising.

Brain Computer Interface in Nature

Brain-machine interfaces promise to aid paralyzed patients by re-routing movement-related signals around damaged parts of the nervous system. A new study in Nature demonstrates a human with spinal injury manipulating a screen cursor and robotic devices by thought alone. Implanted electrodes in his motor cortex recorded neural activity, and translated it into movement commands. A second study, in monkeys, shows that brain-machine interfaces can operate at high speed, greatly increasing their clinical potential. This Nature Web Focus includes exclusive interviews and video footage of experiments, alongside papers that paved the way for these recent advances."
