The future of neuropsychiatry

At a time when most pharmaceutical compagnies tend to withdraw from the field of neuropsychiatry (to much generics , to little time to gain and to complex the field) some will take the torch to hold it high and lighten the path that we can and should all take to port neuroscientific psychiatry into the future. Janssen Pharmaceutica (J&J) has done this with honor and valor and today have shown at the Guislain Museum that they are committed to people and truly care for mental health just as their founder Dr Paul Janssen (haldol, Risperidone...) did before. What a great day that was. A day of dreams and hope but also a day of inspiration and energy for us neuroscientists, now that we know we are not alone in carrying forward this honorable Hippocratic visison.
There were speeches from many prominent people but especially Gen. Br. R.Stockman, ex senator Patrick Kennedy and especially Dr.Manji (cfr picture; head of Neuroscience research at J&J) to inspire and motivate us. This day was pivotal in my mind.

Thanks to all You for keeping the dreams of Dr. J.Guislain, Kan. Triest and the legendary Dr Pol, alive.

I am really impressed, grateful and proud to have been there.

The group, based at the government-financed Riken Brain Science Institute in Wako, Japan, has created an inexpensive chemical cocktail that transforms dead biological tissue from a colored mass into what looks like translucent jelly. Soaking brain tissue in the solution makes it easier for neuroscientists to see what’s inside, a step they hope will uncover the physical basis of personality traits, memories and even consciousness.

“I’m very excited about the potential,” said Dr. Atsushi Miyawaki, a researcher on the team, which published its discovery in the journal Nature Neuroscience.
The chemical solution — patented under the name Scale, a phonetic approximation of the Japanese word for “transparent” — could help neuroscientists map the brain’s underlying architecture, though that goal is still a distant one. At the moment, researchers are working to build such a map, called a “connectome,” of mouse brains, which are far less complex than human ones.
Ultimately, this mapping could be conducted on brains of different ages, Dr. Miyawaki said, providing a glimpse into how the organ develops and even how genetic differences might affect that development.

This is a major leap toward reconstructing internal imagery," explained Professor Jack Gallant, a UC Berkeley neuroscientist and coauthor of the study published online today in the journal Current Biology. "We are opening a window into the movies in our minds."  

According to Gallant, practical applications of the technology could eventually include a better understanding of what is happening in the minds of those who cannot communicate verbally, such as stroke victims, coma patients and individuals with neurodegenerative diseases.   
It may also lay the groundwork for brain-machine interface so that people with cerebral palsy or paralysis can guide computers with their minds. 
Nevertheless, researchers emphasize that the brain imaging technology is "decades" away from allowing users to read thoughts and intentions - a theme which is prevalent in numerous dystopian science fiction books.   Yet, the achievements of Galant's team are particularly impressive, since the scientists actually decoded brain signals generated by moving pictures.
"Our natural visual experience is like watching a movie," said Shinji Nishimoto, lead author of the study and a post-doctoral researcher in Gallant's lab.   "In order for this technology to have wide applicability, we must understand how the brain processes these dynamic visual experiences."  
Nishimoto and two other research team members served as subjects for the experiment, as the procedure requires volunteers to remain still inside the MRI scanner for hours at a time.
They watched two separate sets of Hollywood movie trailers, while an fMRI measured blood flow through the visual cortex, the part of the brain that processes visual information. On the computer, the brain was divided into small, three-dimensional cubes known as volumetric pixels, or "voxels."

The brain activity was recorded while subjects viewed the first set of clips which were fed into a computer program that learned, second by second, to associate visual patterns in the movie with the corresponding brain activity.

While not delivering a knockout blow, the discovery of penicillin in 1928 provided a potent weapon in the fight against a wide range of bacterial infections. The quest to develop a similarly broad-spectrum drug to fight viral infections has proven more difficult but now researchers at MIT's Lincoln Laboratory have designed a drug that has so far proven effective against all 15 viruses it has been tested on. These include rhinoviruses that cause the common cold, H1N1 influenza, a stomach virus, a polio virus, dengue fever and several other types of hemorrhagic fever.

While there are a number drugs that are effective against specific viruses, such as the protease inhibitors used to control HIV infection, they are relatively rare and susceptible to viral resistance. In a development that could change the way viral infections are treated, the MIT researchers have designed a drug that can identify cells that have been infected not just by a specific virus, but by any virus, then kill those cells to terminate the infection.

Home beer-brewing is sort of like writing a novel - although you might like the idea of having done it, the thought of all the work involved in doing it can be off-putting. If the PR materials are to be believed, however, the WilliamsWarn brewing machine could make the process a lot easier ... and quicker. Unlike the four weeks required by most home brewing systems, it can reportedly produce beer in just seven days.
The WilliamsWarn was created by New Zealand "beer-thinkers" Ian Williams and Anders Warn, and was released in that country this April. The duo claim that it addresses 12 of the key challenges thwarting many home brewers, including the carbonation process, temperature control, and clarification.
Kind of like a Mr. Coffee (perhaps they should have called it "Mr. Beer"), the machine reportedly incorporates all the hardware needed for brewing. This includes a stainless steel pressure vessel with carbonation level control, and systems to control factors such as clarification, sediment removal, temperature, and gas dispensation. Last, but certainly not least, it also features a draft dispense mechanism, for pouring out a glass of the chilled "commercial quality" finished product.

This is an 8-minute video of Euclideon CEO Bruce Robert Dell (NOT Bruce Wayne Acer) explaining his company's 'Unlimited Detail Real-Time Rendering Technology', that's allegedly 100,000x more detailed than current polygon-based computer graphics. According to Bruce (who definitely has the pipes for educational television voice-over work), the system operates with point-cloud data, that enables point-cloud "atoms" to be rendered in real-time, in unlimited quantities. BOLD STATEMENT IS BOLD. In some of the demo-reel, they have renderings at the precision of 64 atoms per cubic millimeter, or 1-million atoms per cubic inch, and even zoom in on some dirt to prove the claim. I dunno, a lot of people in the Youtube comments are screaming, "lies!", "investment scam!", and "show some stinking animation!" which was a little awkward because when they finally died down I was the only one yelling "show some steamy man-action!" What? I had my fingers in my ears and I drifted off!

But what we do know about is the interaction between large crowds and the police and you could do much worse than check out the work of psychologist Clifford Stott who researches how crowds react to policing and what triggers violence.

For those that are interested I am posting the flow chart of the

mathematics of LORETA. J = currents in units of uA/cm^3 and phi =
electrical potentials at the scalp surface in uV. This is the standard
math for the lead field and the minimum norm. Roberto added the
physiological constraint of the 3D Laplacian operator which regularized
the matrix (reduced the dimensionality) so that a single solution for the
elements of the source matrix can be obtained. The Laplacian operator
maximally smoothed the values in the local vacinity of each source and
approximates the tendency of the brain to synchronize large numbers of
neurons, thus the term "low resolution", i.e., a smearing of the currents.
This does not mean that LORETA has low spatial accuracy because the
voxel with maximum current is not distorted by the operator and can still
be detected and this single voxel is spatially accurate and near to the
center of the neural activation.

I know that only a few on the forum are interested in the math, but this
flow chart has a beauty all of its own and represents the combined
thoughts of hundreds of people over the last few centuries. A good source

Nearly 34 years after leaving Earth, Voyager 1 and Voyager 2, humankind’s most distant space emissaries, are closing in on the border crossing to interstellar space, flying at 17 kilometers per second now through what seems to be a strange sea of humongous and “frothy” magnetic bubbles.

The Voyagers are in the heliosheath, the boundary region between our solar system and the rest of the Milky Way Galaxy, and have been since each crossed the Termination Shock in December 2004 and August 2007 respectively. So strong a force that what was meant to be a bas relief has completely materialised in a strange fragile but somewhat uncanny 3D reality. The words of Dylan Thomas come to mind: the force that trough the green fuse drive the flower. It has created doors without hinges that give way to Dantes inferno guarded by strange entangled and unfinished ephymeridae. It is not Bosch, it's stronger, it's proto-Bosch where everyone will find the reflection of his own pains and worries.
This work is indeed the never finished endproduct of dreams of fear and memories of pain melted in the furnaces of Freuds Es and and shaped into pure art of a strange but timeless fascination with the "celestian" beauty of it's amazing complex entangled fragility. Giant laser beam to connect two Liverpool galleries

A huge green laser will conjoin FACT (Foundation for Art and Creative Technology) with Tate Liverpool this winter. Travelling 800 metres as the crow flies, the beam of light will make a symbolic connection between the two galleries during their joint exhibition of video artist, pioneer and composer Nam June Paik.
Artist Peter Appleton, who was behind the laser which joined the Anglican and Metropolitan cathedrals in Liverpool during 2008 Capital of Culture, has been commissioned by FACT to create the artwork, Laser Link, which references Nam June Paik’s innovative laser works.
The artwork also marks 2010 as the 50th anniversary of the laser.

Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) was a treatment developed in Italy in 1938. ECT machines transmitted electric currents to the brain in timed pulses. This caused a massive convulsion or seizure. It was thought possible to ‘shock’ a patient out of a severe mental disorder. This machine is a mains operated appliance and has adjustable settings for both time and voltage administered. The Second World War resulted in massive advances in the electronics industry. It meant machines such as this were commercially available through a highly skilled industry. This machine was produced in 1945, 11 years before the first psychoactive drugs became available. ECT had always been controversial and psychoactive drugs quickly became a competing therapy in psychiatric care. The machine is described as a mark IV ECT machine. It was made by Spencer-Paterson and electronic engineering company Ferranti Limited

Brain Computer Interface (BCI) technology provides a direct electronic interface and can convey messages and commands directly from the human brain to a computer. BCI technology involves monitoring conscious brain electrical activity via electroencephalogram (EEG) signals and detecting characteristics of EEG patterns via digital signal processing algorithms that the user generates to communicate. It has the potential to enable the physically disabled to perform many activities, thus improving their quality of life and productivity, allowing them more independence and reducing social costs. The challenge with BCI, however, is to extract the relevant patterns from the EEG signals produced by the brain each second. Recently, there has been a great progress in the development of novel paradigms for EEG signal recording, advanced methods for processing them, new applications for BCI systems and complete software and hardware packages used for BCI applications. This book provides a concise overview of the possible clinical applications of standard EEG in clinical psychiatry. After a short history, the book describes the physiologic basis of the EEG signal, then reviews the principles of EEG in terms of technical backgrounds and requirements, EEG recording and signal analysis, with plentiful illustrations of the most frequent biological or technical artefacts. Normal EEG patterns and waveforms for easy reference are clearly presented, before the detailed description of abnormal patterns. With the basic information in hand, the reader progresses to an account of the role of EEG in the diagnostic work up in psychiatry, covering nonconvulsive status epilepticus, frontal lobe seizures and non-epileptic seizures. The clinical application of EEG in both childhood and adult disorders follows, including many case vignettes. The effects of psychotropic drugs on EEG are highlighted. The book closes with a discussion of currently available certification venues for Clinical Neurophysiology along with limitations of each venue. It calls for the development of training guidelines and certification processes specific to Psychiatric Electrophysiology. The material is clearly presented throughout, with plenty of figures, tables with summaries of relevant findings, flow diagrams for diagnostic work-up, boxes with learning points, and short lists of key references. Using computer animation1 based on molecular research2 it is possible to see how DNA is actually copied in living cells. This animation shows the “assembly line” of biochemical machines which pull apart the DNA double helix and output a copy of each strand. The DNA to be copied enters the whirling blue molecular machine, called helicase, which spins it as fast as a jet engine as it unwinds the double helix into two strands. One strand is copied continuously, and can be seen spooling off on the other side. Things are not so simple for the other strand, because it must be copied backwards, so it is drawn out repeatedly in loops and copied one section at a time. The end result is two new DNA molecules.
