Brave new World
The APA has decided to cut loose from pharmaceutical Industry sponsored symposia and congresses.
Congratulations !!
This is a brave and bold move that is intended to reinstall confidence from patients in the objectivity and autonomy of their psychiatrists and therapists. It will probably be followed by many European boards and I am confident that our federal government will cheer this very openly. Psychiatry: ten points !
Question: is this really a good decision ? At eye glance YES !! Why...Sir, does not everybody like an open , autonomic and independent organisation ? Sure they do but how long will that last ? Should we not do a marketing study first ?
Psychiatry is a poor and largely underpaid speciality without any surplus or extra sources of income. Those sources are badly needed and relied on in order to finance our joung assistents for travel and hotel expences to international meetings and seminars , in order to invite top speakers, organise good quality local conferences, offer good quality trainings and so on.
If pharmaceutical industry is no longer sollicited for this support who will fill the gap ? Government ? If here in belgium we must count on that kind of support from the government we could wait forever.
Well not forever because the vacuum will be quickly filled by government directed organisations who loudly claim they only care for patient quality but in fact especially drive on cheap stuff and low cost. This means not necessarily bad quality but it neither assures the best of it for care nor cure. Is that the autonomy we all want ? Or is it a "new" brave new world to come ? Will it be a better one for our patients ? I am not so confident about this.
Autonomy is OK but beware for the wolves in "cheap" skin.
GO
