Two interesting articles in SciAm shed an interesting view on the mechanism of working memory (recurrent feed foreward networks that can go "poof" all of a sudden) while older memories forming stable cortical associative networks do not need the hippocampi framework anymore to centralise and tense their chords (explaining why in Alzheimer, nothwithstanding extensive hippocampal en enthorhinal damage, older episodic memory contents is sometimes well preserved untill very late in the cortical stage of the disease).
